Tehran Metro Signage System

Masoud Sepehr

At present, nearly three million people use urban Metro trains in Tehran and its outskirts everyday. Tehran & Outskirts Metro Exploitation Company started to have the collection of all its guiding signage system designed and redesigned in 2008 while improving the quality of travel, speed and passenger transference at the same time. The collection was designed in Sepehr Studio in collaboration with Pedram Harby and Masood Sepehr in 2008. It was launched in 2009.
Different sorts of signs which lacked harmony or a specific design strategy had already been used, but using a fresh collection in new stations gained credence gradually and now in most stations new signs are being installed.
Numerous stations of Tehran Metro vary in interior and exterior design. At this stage, designers have given solutions as to the most common matters in all stations which have been applied and trialed. The designers have compiled a comprehensive guidebook in six chapters as follows:
- Basic elements including signs, colors and fonts
- Navigation along the course
- Ticket hall and passenger ushering
- Signs and other complementary symbols
- Out-of-the-station signs
- Size and installation methods
