Beyond Expectation

Alireza Fani

It is said that design is based on a universal thought and philosophy that aims at providing solutions for society’s problems — or making problems simpler and easier to deal with. Such a viewpoint has several values and capacities that have deep positive impacts on people’s routine lives, resulting in lifestyle changes and increased quality of life. Perhaps the vast developments that have taken place in the world are inspired by this viewpoint — the result of which has added value and appeal in various products, and has increasingly developed based on research, creativity and innovation.

However, it seems that this objective has long been forgotten in our country and we are used to see everything as a common rule and accept it as it is. The print and visual communication industries are no exception in this respect. Merely the updated technology and machinery has convinced us to call flashy products exquisite works. Nevertheless, sometimes there are people who aim to break this common repetition in order to change their own and others’ worlds through constant exploration and obsession. Of course there are people who attempt to change their working conditions and career, and to create appealing values and attractions with design thinking. Evidently, the unconventional character of this approach makes it more difficult and requires greater time and energy:
Splitting heaven’s ceiling and trying a wholly new design

Extraordinary folding lines, neat and orderly stitches, distinctive accuracy and obsession, along with responsibility, intimacy, trust, and many other features are what I witnessed in my first encounter with Band Design, Gazelle Parizad and Arad Farhadi’s studio. In the early autumn of 2015, we had a meeting in their studio, I saw their works, and became familiar with their view towards design. In that very first meeting, I noticed that I am finally realizing the idea I had long developed in my mind: a photo collection that was not going to be framed on a wall as expected. I could now imagine a handmade book of my works. I finished the photography process in less than a month and came back to them with the plan I had. The primary version was so pleasing that it made me consider working on two more series.

Apart from their admirable precision and delicacy, they provide solutions for each problem that are sometimes more reasonable than what the designer has in mind. They definitely spark new ideas in the designer’s head of his/her future projects. Band Design is not a binding, cover making, non-tailored workshop; it is a design studio for exchanging and developing ideas in order to create attractive, differentiated products. Brilliant examples of the works of this young studio include design and production of booklets, notebooks, albums, collections with fine, unique stitches according to each subject, posters and brochures of Vije School of Visual Communications with eye-catching, exciting folds and packages, etc. My last three collections would never have been created without the help of Gazelle and Arad. Now, I love these three books more than all my other works and knowing these two designers is a turning point I will never forget.
